The Bangkok Balm Story: From a Family Kitchen to Modern Science

The foundation of Bangkok Balm lies in a lifetime legacy of healing. Numchai “Chai” Lertvechakul grew up in a traditional Bangkok pharmacy, watching his father, a respected practitioner of Chinese medicine, heal patients using ancient wisdom.

Chai spent his childhood helping his father prepare traditional medications in the family kitchen. This gave him a deep-rooted connection to herbal medicine and a dream to create products that make a positive difference in people's lives.

Blending Tradition with Agro-Industrial Innovation

To bring his vision to life, Chai combined his heritage with formal scientific training, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Agro-Industrial Product Development from Kasetsart University.

Kasetsart is internationally recognized for its leadership in agriculture and life sciences. This academic expertise allowed Chai to solve a major problem for modern Thai families: the greasy, staining nature of traditional herbal balms.

The “Specific Gel Formula” Breakthrough

Chai’s passion drove him to solve a common problem for Thai consumers. He noticed modern families were moving away from potent Thai herbs. The reason? Traditional balms were too greasy, smelled "old-fashioned," and ruined good clothing with stubborn oil stains.

The turning point came when Chai’s own child suffered from skin irritations. Greasy traditional ointments were too uncomfortable for his young skin and the sticky residue made daily life difficult.

Leveraging his university degree, Chai spent six months of rigorous research and development bridging the gap between tradition and modern chemistry to innovate a water-based gel.

Following in his father’s footsteps, Chai hand crafted the first batches of Bangkok Balm at home. He refined the formula using his mother’s food blender to process herbal extracts and his father’s traditional Chinese medicine scale for precision when weighing ingredients.

Proven Results & Market Growth

Chai tested the early versions of his proprietary gel on himself, his family, and with over 500 volunteers among his friends and colleagues. He registered Bangkok Balm Organic Acanthaceae Herbal Gel with the Thai FDA and officially launched the product in March 2011.

This was followed by the launch of Bangkok Balm Plai Muscle Gel in 2014, continuing Bangkok Balm's commitment to providing fast comfort with a smooth, dry touch.

Since then, Bangkok Balm has become the preferred remedy of thousands of Thai families, as well as consumers in Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.
